You Can Be Part of the Solution in Guacimal
It is no secret that the rise in indiscriminate and concentrated settlement of some immigrants in Costa Rica has a set of often unwitting, but detrimental effects on the environment and Costa Ricans (Ticos), such as gentrification, water shortages and environmental destruction.
Concentrating development in popular coastal or mountain-top areas for their views overwhelms local resources and communities. Coastal aquifers face severe strain and hidden water shortages, while mountaintop clearing destroys vital forests and causes soil erosion. Simultaneously, this centralization fuels gentrification, displacing Ticos from their towns as rents and costs soar, fracturing communities.
Choosing to live outside established expat enclaves directly addresses these common issues. By settling in the less-centralized area of Guacimal significantly reduces pressure on already-stressed coastal water systems and avoid contributing to deforestation and erosion on fragile mountain-top slopes. This conscious decentralization is fundamental to responsible water and nature stewardship.

Living integrated within a predominantly Tico community, not an expat one, combats displacement and gentrification. It supports the local economy fairly, fosters genuine connection, and avoids pricing residents out. This choice respects the people who sustain this place, ensuring development benefits the community rather than replacing it.Immigration itself is not the issue. It is how we do what we do that matters the most. This is why the Sustainability Center of Costa Rica has made Guacimal its headquarters for over a decade.
This reflects a clear commitment to being part of Costa Rica's solution, not its strain. It prioritizes the long-term well-being of both the people who call this country home and the essential resources – especially water – that make life here beautiful and sustainable. Living this way will ensure the beauty and culture that drew us here endure for everyone, while still allowing like-minded newcomers to make this their home too.
We hope those who come join our community help us contribute to the wellbeing of this beautiful place, while enjoying all it has to offer- a perfect balance of conscious giving and receiving.
